From Principal's Desk

Beside a long volatile international border and the wild Sunderbans, Barasat Govt. College started its dream run way back in 1950 as an Intermediate College; it had its home in some hostel buildings of Barasat Government School. Gradually the status was upgraded, catering to the needs of the people who could not afford going to Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Soon various Pure Science and Life Science subjects in Honours and Pass courses were on track and a purely under-graduate College started functioning. In 2003, the Department of Botany was elevated to the status of Post-Graduation and achieved academic autonomy. Later, P.G. courses were introduced in Bengali, Zoology, and Physics.

The College aspires education for all, irrespective of financial background, gender, caste, class and faith. Besides learning the students are acquainted to social responsibilities and counseled for moral development. Dedication of the academic staff members for teaching and research made it possible to achieve the DST-FIST award in 2013. The college administration has been further complemented by the sincere cooperation of the supporting staff members.
